JSW Energy’s Subsidiary Inks Deal with Reliance Power to Acquire Wind Project for Rs 132 Crore

In a significant move towards expanding its renewable energy portfolio, JSW Energy’s subsidiary, JSW Renewable Energy, has finalized an agreement with Reliance Power to acquire a 45 MW wind power project located in Vashpet, Maharashtra, for a sum of Rs 132 crore. The acquisition marks a strategic step for JSW Energy as it further strengthens its foothold in the renewable energy sector.

JSW Renewable Energy (Coated) Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of JSW Neo Energy Limited and a step-down subsidiary of JSW Energy Limited, focuses on the generation of renewable power. The agreement, confirmed through a regulatory filing by Reliance Power, signifies a pivotal transaction in the energy market landscape.

Reliance Power highlighted the sale agreement, emphasizing the transfer of its wind power project to JSW Renewable Energy for the stipulated amount. The transaction is slated for completion by May 21, 2024, subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.

Sources within Reliance Power revealed that the proceeds from the sale will be primarily utilized to retire existing debt. With a commitment to achieving a debt-free status by the end of the fiscal year, Reliance Power aims to streamline its financial structure. As of March 31, 2023, the company’s outstanding debt stood at approximately Rs 700 crore.

In recent months, Reliance Power has taken proactive measures to settle its debts with various banking institutions. Notably, within the last three months, the company has successfully resolved outstanding obligations with DBS Bank, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank. This concerted effort underscores Reliance Power’s determination to strengthen its financial position and optimize operational efficiency.

The wind power project in Vashpet has been operational since June 2013, contributing to the renewable energy landscape in Maharashtra. With a power offtake agreement already in place with Adani Electricity, the project holds strategic significance in catering to the energy demands of the region.

For JSW Energy, the acquisition aligns with its broader commitment to sustainable energy generation. By integrating the wind power project into its renewable energy portfolio, JSW Energy reinforces its position as a key player in the transition towards clean and sustainable energy solutions.

The agreement between JSW Renewable Energy and Reliance Power not only signifies a business transaction but also symbolizes a collective effort towards fostering renewable energy initiatives in India. As both companies navigate the evolving energy landscape, collaborations and acquisitions of this nature are instrumental in driving progress towards a greener, more sustainable future.

In conclusion, the acquisition of the wind power project in Vashpet represents a significant milestone for JSW Energy and Reliance Power, underscoring their shared commitment to renewable energy development and financial resilience.
