The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a significant move in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj constituency, replacing long-standing MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh with his son, Karan Bhushan. This decision follows allegations of sexual harassment against the senior leader, which have generated considerable controversy and pressure.
Karan Bhushan, known for his involvement in sports administration as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association, as well as his role as the chairperson of a cooperative bank in Nawabganj, Gonda district, has been chosen to carry the party’s banner in the upcoming elections.
The decision to replace Brij Bhushan comes in the wake of mounting accusations of sexual harassment, particularly from prominent wrestlers like Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia. These allegations led to protests and demands for legal action against the six-term MP, who also served as the chief of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
Facing intense scrutiny, Brij Bhushan was charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the Delhi Police on June 15, 2023. He was granted bail on July 20, 2023, but the allegations continued to cast a shadow over his political career.
Brij Bhushan’s influence in Kaiserganj, Uttar Pradesh, is considerable, owing to his ownership of numerous private educational institutions and his decade-long tenure as the president of the WFI. However, with the upcoming Lok Sabha election scheduled for May 20, the BJP has opted for a change in leadership to maintain its stronghold in the region.
In the previous election, Brij Bhushan secured 5,81,358 votes, but faced stiff competition from opponents of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Congress. This year’s electoral battle is anticipated to be closely watched, with the BJP’s decision to field Karan Bhushan adding an intriguing dynamic to the contest.
