One In Four Of Young Adults Suspect Of Having Undiagnosed ADHD Because Of Social Media: New Study

People with ADHD, given proper care and support, could find their ways to cope and live healthy fulfilling lives. That’s why it is very important to clarify that ADHD is not indicative of bad parenting or weakness of will but is a neurobiological condition that happens to some people due to some conditions of their innate brain biology.

Released on Monday, a new survey revealed that 25% of American adults, or one in four, believe they may have a currently popular belief that attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is the province of childhood.

A nationwide poll of one thousand adult Americans found that social media videos helped people realize perhaps undiagnosed ADHD is the reason behind adults’ problems of distraction, inattention, and restlessness.

Fewer than 13% of survey respondents say they have ever discussed their fears with their physician

And it is creating a problem, for the team is worried about what happens in cases of mistaken self-treatment.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders that influences a person’s attention span, capability to control impulses, and regulatory levels of energy. The majority of the people who are affected by this disorder still experience the symptoms of it when they grow up but were diagnosed while still young. These people who suffer from ADHD often cannot pay attention or do assignments and constantly interrupt people because they are unable to check out their behavior. They can also act impulsively or uncontrollably since they cannot regulate their actions.

There Are Three Types Of ADHD:

  1. Predominantly Inattentive type
  2. Predominantly Hyperactive-impulsive type.
  3. Combined Type

Anxiety, depression, and ADHD-all these things can look a lot alike, but the wrong treatment can make things worse instead of helping that person feel better and improve their functioning,” said Justin Barterian, clinical assistant professor in Ohio State University’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Health.

An estimated 4.4 percent of adults between the ages of 18 and 44 have ADHD, and some people aren’t diagnosed until they’re older, Barterian said.

“There’s more awareness of how it can continue to affect folks into adulthood and a lot of people who are realising, once their kids have been diagnosed, that they fit these symptoms as well, given that it’s a genetic disorder,” Barterian said.

Further, more than the older generations, younger adults were more likely to believe they have undiagnosed ADHD.

Barterian said while social media videos can help educate and bring awareness, “seek a psychologist or a psychiatrist or a physician” can help in proper diagnosis and further aid in the treatment of the condition.
