The accident on Friday evening injured 19 passengers. Injured passengers who had serious injuries were shifted to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai. Three patients had been under treatment at the ICU.
Heavy showers lashed Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvallur on Saturday disrupting rescue operations at the site of the Kavarapettai station accident where the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express derailed after crashing with a stationary goods train late last night. The accident left the rear 12-13 coaches derailed and injured at least 19 passengers.
According to the railway officials, it would take 16 hours to repair the railway tracks. The rescue operation was going on in full swing until sudden rainfall stopped the restoration work. The accident took place about 8:30 pm on Friday in Chennai-Gudur section between Ponneri and Kavaraippettai railway stations that comes under the Chennai division of Southern Railway.
Train Diverted To Loop Instead Of Main Line
In a statement explaining the reason behind the accident, the Southern Railway said that diverting to the loop line instead of going to the main line led to the mishappening. The accident will be probed by the Railway Safety Commissioner, said Southern Railway GM.

Meanwhile, the Southern Railway established a help desk at Chennai station to provide relief to those who were affected by the train accident. Southern Railway post, “Help Desk Established at Dr. MGR Chennai Central Railway Station to Aid Passengers of 12578 Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express.”
CM Stalin Monitors Rescue Operations
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said he was constantly monitoring the rescue operations and the injured passengers had been taken to the hospital,” he said. Meanwhile, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin visited the hospital and reached accident spot on Friday and met with passengers at the Government Stanley Medical College Hospital in Chennai.
Stranded Passengers Accommodated In Special Train
Stranded passengers of the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati Express were sent to their destinations by a special train that departed from Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station on Saturday early morning to continue its onward journey.
