Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann Diagnosed With Leptospirosis; Know Its Causes, Symptoms, Treatment, And Preventive Measures

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann has been diagnosed with leptospirosis, a bacterial infection. Read on to know its causes, symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures in order to stay informed about this infectious disease.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has tested positive for leptospirosis, a bacterial contamination, after he was admitted to Fortis Hospital in Mohali on Wednesday for a routine check-up. Doctors say that Bhagwant Mann’s signs and symptoms are “pretty stable” and he is receiving appropriate antibiotics. What exactly is leptospirosis and how is it caused? This is a breakdown of the bacterial infection, its signs and symptoms, treatment and prevention:

The infection of Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira. This bacterium is found in the excretions of infected animals, primarily pigs. Infection among humans is through direct contact with contaminated water, soil, or food. The condition is common in tropical and subtropical parts of the world, often during heavy rains or floods when the virus thrives in warm, humid climates

Causes Of Leptospirosis

It has mostly been spread by water or soil contaminated with the infected animal’s faeces, rivers, lakes, and floodplains. Some of the activities that would lead to infection include swimming in contaminated water, farming, or transmission of the virus through tissue cuts, abscesses, or mucous membranes like the eyes, nose, and mouth on poor hygiene surfaces and into the body.

Symptoms of Leptospirosis

The symptoms of leptospirosis vary from slight to severe. In some cases, the infection may advance to serious conditions such as kidney or liver damage, dementia, and respiratory problems. Some of the common symptoms include the following;

  • Heavy fever
  • Pain in muscles, mostly calves and the lower back.
  • Headache
  • and vomiting from the stomach
  • Abdominal pain
  • Red eyes
  • Burning of the skin

In extreme cases, serious complications can advance to jaundice, organ failure, and even if not treated immediately.

How is Leptospirosis diagnosed?

Diagnosis of leptospirosis is done by a clinical history and physical examination combined with laboratory investigations. Laboratory diagnosis is critical since its clinical manifestations are sometimes very similar to other diseases, such as dengue or malaria. Possible tests for diagnosing leptospirosis include the following:

  1. Blood test: It is applied for detecting or establishing the presence of antibodies against Leptospira bacteria in blood.
  2. Urinalysis: Tests if the bacteria is present in urine.
  3. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR): Molecular test that identifies the DNA of the virus.

Microscopic Adhesion Test (MAT): It was set up initially as the gold standard test to diagnose the condition but it consumes more time and often is not available.

Treatment and Prevention of Leptospirosis

This infection can be treated with antibiotics like doxycycline or penicillin and would be most useful if intervention is made early in the course of the disease; severe cases would necessitate hospitalization and supportive care, such as intravenous fluids, oxygen treatment, or dialysis if the kidneys are affected.

The best ways to protect oneself from leptospirosis include avoiding contact with water or soil that may be infected and specifically in areas with poor sanitation. Exposure risk can also be minimized by wearing protective clothing and boots while working in cold weather that might drown areas, and veterinary vaccines are available.
