How to Identify If Ghee Is Real Or Fake? Follow These Effective Tips And Tricks

Confirm if the ghee you are using is pure by using these simple yet effective identification methods. Learn expert tips and tricks to distinguish real ghee from fake versions and pick the right one during purchases.

The festive season has begun, and with it, the consumption of desi ghee for sweets, prasad, and puja is going to increase. From lamp lighting in front of the goddess to prasad and havan in Durga Puja, desi ghee is used a lot. Apart from that, sweets made of ghee are also very much on the list of Diwali and other Indian festivals. Amidst this high consumption, black marketing also starts appearing in the market. In the name of real desi ghee, adulterated quality ghee starts selling.

Poor-quality fake ghee is prepared by mixing 60 percent vegetable oil and the scent of Desi ghee with about 40 percent refined oil. This adulterated ghee is not only impure but also poisonous to your health. Save yourself and your family from the poison of adulterated ghee by checking its purity. Today, we are going to tell you many ways from which you can know how pure the ghee available in the market is in the name of Desi ghee.

Here’s how you can identify the purity of Desi Ghee:

1. Iodine Test

For checking the purity of ghee bought from the market, you can perform an iodine test. For this, you can add a few drops of iodine or two teaspoons of iodized salt in ghee. If your ghee color changes to purple, it means that your ghee is adulterated. However, if your ghee is pure, there will be no change in the color of the ghee even after adding iodine.

2. HCL Test

You can also test the purity of ghee by doing the HCL test or hydrochloric acid test. Mix 5 ml of hydrochloric acid with about 2 ml of ghee. If the color of the ghee turns red, then your ghee is adulterated.

3. Test Ghee On Palm

You can test the purity of ghee using your palms. When ghee starts melting some time after it has been poured onto your hands, then it means the ghee is pure; in case it doesn’t melt, it’s a sign of adulteration. Besides, you will find that real desi ghee will be uniformly grainy, while the adulterated ghee feels sticky and has uneven grains as soon as it is mixed in the hands.

4. Sugar Will Detect The Purity

You can also check out its purity by using sugar, as you usually see it in your kitchen. Mix sugar quite well in ghee and leave it for some time. If its color becomes red after some time, then you will understand that the ghee has been adulterated.

5. Try Heating

You would find that the real ghee melts and turns brown. But it appears to be yellowish in color if adulterated. Moreover, the real Desi ghee melts too fast. Adulterated cheese takes time to melt and remains at the bottom.
