Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: Candidates, who filed their nomination contesting the election, filed self-certified affidavits. The candidates were eligible to contest as no provision of Indian criminal law is void if a person is presumed innocent until found guilty.
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024: Confirmed criminal cases against at least 20 per cent candidates in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which include murder, rape and some other serious offences, have been revealed through affidavits submitted to the ECI.
Second Phase Party Candidates Facing Charges Against Them
The candidates with criminal charges against their name are four BJP, four PDP, two Congress, and one National Conference (NC).
47 Candidates Stand Accused Of Criminal Charges
Among the 238 candidates in the second phase of polls in Jammu and Kashmir, 47 have declared crimes against them. These include seven who face charges of crimes against women; among them is a candidate accused of rape. Another 37 candidates face other criminal cases, while three are accused of murder.
What Are ‘Red-alert’ Constituencies?
Those contestants’ appearance has compelled the ECI to put under the red-alert category eight constituencies. ECI has framed guidelines as per which any constituency in which three or more candidates have a criminal case of offence against them must rank as a red alert.
The education qualification of the contestants is significantly minuscule. Candidates have completed education between 5th and 12th grades on average while a candidate declared himself illiterate.
Of the total number of candidates, 114 are graduates or holders of higher qualifications and six have diploma-level education. The age group comprising their distribution is as follows: 84 candidates are between 25-40 years, 105 between 41-60 years, and 49 between 61-80 years.
Three Women Candidates Canvassing In 2nd Phase
Only three female candidates are canvassing for the polls in the second phase of J&K Assembly polls. The main contest for the phase is between BJP and NC-Congress alliance with a strong competition from PDP also coming into the fray.
When will Jammu-Kashmir vote?
Voting for the second phase will take place on September 25 (Wednesday) while the third and final phase will take place on October 1 (Tuesday).

When vote counting will take place in Jammu & Kashmir?
Vote counting will be held on October 8 (Saturday).
In the just-reconceived delimitation process, there are 90 Assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. Of them, the Kashmir division contains 47, while the Jammu division has 43 seats, which includes nine ST seats and seven SC seats.
