The 13-member select committee, headed by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, has unanimously selected ‘Laapataa Ladies’, which is directed by Rao and produced by Aamir Khan, for consideration in the best international picture category at the Academy Awards 2025.
Good day for Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, and everyone associated with ‘Laapataa Ladies‘. Kiran Rao’s film has been shortlisted as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, the Film Federation of India announced officially on Monday. The lead cast is Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta. ‘Laapataa Ladies’, a light-hearted satire on patriarchy, was selected from the 29 films ranging from the Bollywood smash hit ‘Animal’, Malayalam National Award winner ‘Aattam’, to the Cannes winner ‘All We Imagine As Light’.
Other selections included the Tamil movie ‘Maharaja’, the Telugu titles ‘Kalki 2898 A’D and ‘HanuMan’, and the Hindi films ‘Swatantraya Veer Savarkar’ and ‘Article 370’. For those unaware, the Malayalam superhit ‘2018: Everyone is a Hero’ is last year’s film.

Box Office Report
The film opened pretty slowly. But, with wonderful reviews and positive word-of-mouth, it picked up nicely at the box office. According to Sacnilk, the film opened to just Rs 75 lakh and minted almost Rs 4 crore in the opening weekend. It grossed Rs 6.05 crore in the first week, and the overall box office collection of ‘Laapataa Ladies’ after 50 days of theatrical release stood at Rs 17.31 crore.

Directed by Kiran Rao, under the production house of Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ comes to the audience from Jio Studios. The film has been made under the banners Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions. The script has taken inspiration from the prestigious story of Biplab Goswami. Sneha Desai has been taken on for the screenplay and dialogue of the movie, and Divyanidhi Sharma has jotted down additional dialogues.
