As the assembly elections process approaches in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces have been kept on alert and deployed all over the region. This move was done in a bid to prevent threats on the electoral process in a state that has been associated with instability and enmity with neighboring countries.
Just within these past 2 years, the Indian Army and the Border Security Force (BSF) have intensified their patrols along the 744-kilometer-long Line of Control (LoC) and a 198-kilometer international border bearing Pakistan. This attention is important bearing in mind the continuing danger threats from the other side of the border. According to the reports, approximately between 60 to 80 terrorists have crossed this side of the border in the month of March-April of the present year which provoked threats that interrupt the process of elections.
The number of terrorists is believed to be supplied by Pakistan more than ever before has led the Indian security forces to step up operations against the militants. These operations are aimed at pacifying the subversive elements and ensuring that there is no subversion that will help to cause insecurity during the time of the elections.
The use of askaris is one approach just in case the elections should be conducted peaceful and that the citizens are able to exercise their democratic right. Such steps clearly demonstrate that Indian government has woken up to the challenge posed by terrorism and is determined to continue to keep the State of Jammu and Kashmir free from the menace at this particularly sensitive period.
