Deadly J-K Cloudburst: Ramban’s Death Count Rises, Four Still Missing

On 28th August 2024, cloudburst triggered flash floods in the Ramban district of Jammu & Kashmir. This ill-fated occurrence led to the unfortunate demise of three people and four others remained unaccounted for. Flooding resulted from the cloudburst, which resulted in the destruction of houses, several homes in particular, and affected the routines of the inhabitants. A search and rescue process was launched to find the missing people and different agencies like police, SDRF, and Indian army were involved.

A sad incident of cloudburst happened in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir and the death toll reached to three. For now, four people are still unaccounted for and the rescue crews are still slogging it out to search for them. This resulted in floods that rendered some areas inhabitable as virtually all structures including houses, roads and other infrastructure facilities were broken down by the flood.

Killer cloudburst in Ramban district claimed another life on Wednesday afternoon when the dead body of Shazia Banoo was retrieved by the rescuers. Her body was recovered several days later three kilometres from her Dungar Dhandla village thus making it three in this sad event. Other four people are still missing and search operations are still in progress to find them. The community is still in a state of grief and shock following the loss of lives and property but Shazia Banoo’s recovery is an additional agony to the community. People are still advised to stand their ground, assist the rescue squad which has not stopped with the search and actualization of the aid.

People of rescue teams such as firemen, local authority, police and disaster management are still carrying out the search and rescue missions at the scene even during bad weather. While Heavy rain has affected search operations, it has also contributed to increasing the instances of more slide risks thereby making search operations risky.

Local authorities are heavily concerned about the homeless turning into relief camps that are offering the families essentials. The government has also promised that as much as it is in its power, all the assistance to these victims and their families will be provided.

This mishap is an eye-opener because the people living in the hilly areas are not well protected especially during the rainy season or monsoon; so the government needs to improve on its preparedness in the discharge of early warnings in order to counter such eventualities in future.
