From the Ranks to the Top: Sanjeev Raina’s Journey to ITBP ADG

The ITBP officer of 1987 batch, Sanjeev Raina has been appointed as the Additional Director General in the force which looks after the LAC with China though it is the second time that the services where IPS is not dominant have provided the top job to non-IPS men.

An order issued on Wednesday from the MHA(Ministry of Home Affairs) said that Raina of the force’s central sector currently posted in Bhopal as the IG has been promoted to the rank of ADG besides IG Jaspal Singh would be for the panel year 2024.

However, Raina whose age is 59 years will work in the new post for only a period of one month and two weeks as he is expected to retire next month.

Smt Raina joining has brought positive changes such changes include the drawing of attention on the capabilities and Leadership of Non-IPS officers in the ITBP, an organization that is mostly staffed and commanded by officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS) only. His promotion to the ADG rank can therefore be hailed as a result of years of commitment, working experience throughout his operations, not forgetting his effort in enhancing the force. Raina’s rise to this position has been characterized by hard work and professionalism thus opening up new opportunities that other non-IPS officers wish to achieve within the paramilitary hierarchy.

Raina has been working in the ITBP for several years, and during this period has held a succession of roles in demanding topographies and security-related contexts. He speaks fluent Mandarin and bringing wealth of his experience of strategic planning and leadership skills has improved the air of preparedness of the ITBP formations deployed on the border with China which is a sensitive area for India.

This operation has been at the central focus of Raina’s service and he has learnt all that the ITBP is involved in and perhaps has worked on most of the core operations that have seen the transformation of the force as well as the ways in which border security and internal security risk management are dealt with in the contemporary world. The situations he faced in the past have been critical, and these have been utilized in handling disasters, search and rescue operations within the mountains and other areas that are hard to access. Raina’s love for the force and his efficient leadership skill displayed when under pressure has made him famous among his fellows and juniors respectively.

Sanjeev Raina route to this top job is defined by his long service at the borders, intelligence agencies and domestic security. Earlier to his promotion as ADG, Raina worked at different positions in different capacities at the ITBP, where his planning knowledge and ground experience greatly helped the ITBP and the govt to mitigate some of the most difficult terrains and border security problems faced by India.

With the vision of reorganizing, modernizing the paramilitary forces, bettering the operational readiness of the troops, and the sovereignty and security of the nation’s borders, his career has been all encompassing. This means Raina’s leadership focuses on discipline, use of technology and his subordinates’ well-being, and thus, he is respected in all the forces.

Those who have known Sanjeev Raina over the years will agree that his posting to the ITBP as an ADG is a personal triumph, but much more than that, this is a big moment for the force. Due to that, it emphasizes knowledge, effort, and non-traditional professions for employees, encouraging a new generation of officers to achieve more and demonstrate positive results regardless of the cadre to which they belong.
