Transforming Streets: How Rapido and Zomato, other startups leading Bikers Revolution

A decade ago, the landscape of urban safety in India was completely different. The streets were often plagued by crimes against women, rampant road incidents and matters like theft, posing further significant challenges for law enforcement and which did disrupt public order as well. The seamless connection between street thieves and organized gangs was an alarming back then a reality, with many unemployed youth resorting to criminal activities as a means of survival. This vicious cycle of crime not only endangered societal well-being but also frequently led these young individuals into incarceration.

Despite efforts by successive governments to address unemployment, the questionable impact on job creation remained unanswered. However, the advent of innovative business models by pioneering companies and startups has heralded a transformative change.

Ola, founded in 2010 by Bhavish Aggarwal, did add upto this revolution. Initially emerging as a ride-hailing service, Ola has evolved into a comprehensive mobility and manufacturing powerhouse. Beyond offering convenient pick-and-drop services, Ola has become a major boost for many, particularly bikers, by providing them with sustainable employment opportunities. This platform enables individuals to earn a stable income, thereby contributing to a more secure and equitable society.

Similarly, Zomato, co-founded by Deepinder Goyal, Pankaj Chaddah, and Akriti Chopra, has played a pivotal role in this paradigm shift. As a leading food delivery service, Zomato has leveraged its extensive network of bike riders and delivery personnel as its core strength. By creating a vast pool of employment, Zomato not only addresses the issue of job scarcity but also mitigates the risk of youth gravitating towards illicit activities.

This biker revolution has had a profound socio-economic impact. Statistics reveal a significant decrease in petty thefts and street crimes in urban areas where these services are prevalent. The employment opportunities provided by companies like Ola and Zomato have diverted many from a path of crime to one of gainful employment. This shift is not merely about financial stability but also about restoring dignity and purpose among the youth.

The initiatives by the new rising startups are commendable. They highlight how innovative business solutions can address deep-rooted societal issues, offering practical and scalable employment opportunities. By championing the cause of economic inclusion, companies like Ola and Zomato are not just driving profits but also fostering a safer, more prosperous society.

As we look to the future, it is imperative to support and expand such initiatives. The transformation witnessed in the last decade underscores the potential of entrepreneurial ingenuity in completely addressing the complex social challenges. In embracing this new era of employment and security, we pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future.
