Draupadi Murmu, the 15th President of India, took office on July 25, 2022. Prior to her presidency, she served as the Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. Her tenure has been marked by a commitment to empowering marginalized communities and reinforcing democratic principles.
Early Life and Education
Born on June 20, 1958, in a Santhali tribal family in Uparbeda village, Mayurbhanj, Odisha, Murmu’s early life was characterized by significant challenges. After completing her primary education locally, she independently pursued further studies in Bhubaneswar. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ramadevi Women’s College, becoming the first woman from her village to achieve a college education.
Professional Journey
From 1979 to 1983, Murmu worked as a Junior Assistant in the Irrigation and Power Department of Odisha. She later taught at the Sri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre in Rairangpur from 1994 to 1997.
Political Career
Elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Rairangpur constituency in 2000, Murmu served two terms until 2009. She held positions as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Departments of Commerce and Transport (2000-2002) and Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (2002-2004). Known for her innovative initiatives, she earned the Pandit Nilkanth Das – Best Legislator Award in 2007.

Governor of Jharkhand
In 2015, Murmu became the first female tribal Governor of Jharkhand. Her tenure was noted for constitutional adherence and advocacy for tribal rights. She introduced significant reforms in the state’s university examination and recruitment processes, earning respect across political lines.
Interests and Personal Life
Murmu is deeply involved with tribal socio-educational and cultural organizations in Odisha. She is also an avid reader with a strong interest in spirituality. She married the late Shyam Charan Murmu in 1981 and has a daughter, Itishree Murmu, and a son-in-law, Ganesh Hembram.
