On the inaugural day of the Monsoon session, the Parliament witnessed a heated discussion post-lunch under Rule 193, focusing on the Government of India’s preparedness for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. Congress MP Deepender Hooda, known for his vocal stance on sports and youth affairs, launched a scathing critique of the central government’s efforts.
Hooda expressed his skepticism, questioning the very premise of the discussion. “What preparations are we even discussing when the contingent has already left for the Paris Olympics?” he asked pointedly. The Paris Olympics, set to commence on July 26, Friday, have seen the Indian athletes already en route, making the debate on readiness appear redundant to him.
Hooda argued that the House should instead concentrate on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, advocating for a long-term vision and robust preparations. He emphasized the importance of infrastructure, referencing the allocated budget of 470 crore INR, and demanded transparency and accountability in its implementation. His speech highlighted the necessity of prioritizing sports like hockey and wrestling, disciplines where India has historically excelled and secured numerous medals.
In a sharp rebuke, Hooda criticized the Sports Minister for failing to address the grievances of protesting wrestlers, who were willing to sacrifice their medals by throwing them into the river Ganga in a poignant demonstration of their exploitation. This, he argued, epitomized the government’s neglect of athletes’ welfare and justice.
Hooda also spotlighted Haryana, a state known for its sporting talent, in his critique. This prompted a sarcastic remark from Speaker Om Birla, who reminded Hooda that the discussion was not taking place in the Haryana Legislative Assembly, subtly suggesting that his arguments were too region-specific.
Deepender Singh Hooda, a prominent figure in the Indian National Congress, has a rich political lineage and a track record of advocating for youth and sports development. Born on January 4, 1978, he is the son of Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the former Chief Minister of Haryana. Deepender’s political career began early; he was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 2005 from the Rohtak constituency, following the death of his grandfather.
Throughout his political journey, Hooda has been an ardent supporter of infrastructural development and social welfare. His academic background, with a Master’s in Business Administration from Kelley School of Business, Indiana University, has equipped him with a strategic outlook on economic and developmental issues. Hooda’s efforts in Parliament have often centered on enhancing the sports ecosystem in India, ensuring that athletes receive the necessary support and facilities to compete on the world stage.
His recent speech in Parliament not only underscored his commitment to sports but also highlighted his broader vision for India’s future in international competitions. By calling for a shift in focus towards the 2028 Olympics, Hooda advocated for sustained and strategic planning, aiming to secure India’s position as a formidable sporting nation.
