Mumbai, July 2024 – Mumbai has been experiencing relentless rainfall over the past few days, significantly affecting daily life and infrastructure. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city, warning of extremely heavy rainfall that is expected to continue until tomorrow afternoon. This has led to several challenges and tragic incidents across the city and its surrounding areas.
Over 100 local trains have been canceled due to severe waterlogging on tracks and point failures at key stations like Kalyan. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) has been asked to deploy additional buses to manage the commuter rush resulting from train cancellations.
Schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar have been closed as a precautionary measure. The municipal authorities have also postponed all exams scheduled for these days.
A devastating landslide in Raigad district has resulted in at least 16 deaths. Rescue operations by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are ongoing, with several teams deployed in the area. Efforts are being hampered by continuous rainfall and poor visibility, but local authorities are determined to find and assist those still trapped.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has been actively monitoring the situation from the control room and has directed various departments to ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens. He has ordered government offices to allow employees to leave early to avoid being caught in the heavy rain.
The Maharashtra government has announced financial aid for the families of those who lost their lives in the Raigad landslide. Additionally, the administration is working with the Indian Air Force to potentially airlift the injured, although bad weather has delayed these efforts.
The IMD has maintained a yellow alert for Mumbai and an orange alert for neighboring districts like Thane, Palghar, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, indicating the likelihood of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall in these areas. Citizens are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
Mumbai is facing one of its most challenging monsoon seasons in recent years, with significant rainfall leading to widespread disruption and tragic incidents. The authorities are working round-the-clock to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the residents.
