Team India’s World Cup-winning squad has finally returned to India after a 16-hour-long flight from Barbados to Delhi. The team reached the ITC Maurya Hotel first and then cut the cake before leaving for the PM’s office. They will have breakfast with Narendra Modi and then leave for the airport to reach Mumbai.
PM Narendra Modi met India’s World Cup-winning squad led by Rohit Sharma today at his residence. The team, after being stuck in Barbados since Saturday (June 29) due to Hurricane Beryl, finally reached New Delhi today at around 6 a.m. IST. Hundreds and thousands of fans greeted them at the airport, even as the players also enjoyed the atmosphere with Rohit having the World Cup in his hands.
PM Modi also had a conversation with each of the players, probably asking them about their feelings about being a world champion. The World Cup-winning squad also clicked a picture with the Prime Minister at the center holding the trophy. It was all smiles at the much-awaited meeting that took place at the PM’s residence in Delhi.
For the uninitiated, the Team India squad along with the BCCI officials, including Jay Shah, landed in Delhi this morning from Barbados in a special Air India flight that had reached the Caribbean on July 3 (Wednesday). The players got the heroes welcome at the airport, with thousands of fans gathering to get a glimpse of the champions and the T20 World Cup trophy.
As a special traditional gesture to the team, when the team was entering the hotel ITC Maurya, a specially baked trophy cake was made for the victorious T20 World Cup. The players cut the cake, and as we were proceeding to meet PM Modi, PM Modi met the team for nearly 90 minutes, and the team left for the airport on the bus. India’s World Cup-winning squad will now fly to Mumbai by 4 PM IST. The victory parade is planned for 5 PM from Nariman Point up to Wankhede Stadium. The gates are to be opened for the fans at the stadium, there is to be a victory lap, and a function is also to be held.
