HM Amit Shah to Review J&K Security Ahead of Amarnath Yatra

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, focusing on the preparations for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. This review follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent directive to deploy comprehensive counter-terror measures in response to a series of terror incidents in the region.

High-Level Security Meeting

Shah will chair a high-level meeting at North Block, just three days after Prime Minister Modi’s similar meeting. Attendees will include National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha, Army Chief General Manoj Pande, Army Chief-designate Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla, Director of Intelligence Bureau Tapan Deka, Director General of CRPF Anish Dayal Singh, Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police R R Swain, among other top security officials.

Reviewing the Situation

The meeting will assess the current security scenario in Jammu and Kashmir, focusing on:

  • Deployment of Forces: Evaluation of the security forces positioned along the International Border and Line of Control.
  • Infiltration Attempts: Monitoring and countering infiltration efforts by terrorists.
  • Ongoing Operations: Status of ongoing anti-terror operations within the Union Territory.
  • Terrorist Strength: Estimations of terrorist numbers and their operational capabilities in the region.

Terror Incidents and Countermeasures

The urgency of this review is underscored by recent terror incidents. Last week, terrorists launched attacks in Reasi, Kathua, and Doda districts, resulting in the deaths of nine pilgrims and a CRPF jawan, and injuries to seven security personnel and several others. Security forces responded by neutralizing two suspected Pakistani terrorists in an encounter in Kathua district, recovering a significant cache of arms and ammunition.

Preparations for Amarnath Yatra

The Amarnath Yatra, set to begin on June 29 and continue until August 19, involves pilgrims traveling to the cave shrine at an altitude of 3,880 meters in the south Kashmir Himalayas. Pilgrims use two main routes: Baltal and Pahalgam. Last year, over 4.28 lakh pilgrims visited the shrine, with this year’s numbers expected to reach five lakh.

Enhanced Security Measures

In response to the recent violence and the large expected turnout, enhanced security measures are planned:

  • RFID Tracking: All pilgrims will be issued RFID cards for real-time location tracking.
  • Insurance Coverage: Pilgrims will receive an insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh, and animals carrying pilgrims will be insured for Rs 50,000 each.
  • Smooth Transit: Ensuring seamless transit from airports and railway stations to the pilgrimage base camps.
  • Comprehensive Security: Adequate security arrangements throughout the pilgrimage route.

Strategic Directives

Shah is anticipated to provide broad guidelines to intensify counter-terror operations in alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s directive. The meeting aims to bolster security protocols and ensure the safety of all Amarnath pilgrims amid heightened security concerns.

In summary, Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s upcoming review of Jammu and Kashmir’s security situation and preparations for the Amarnath Yatra highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and peaceful pilgrimage, despite recent challenges posed by terrorist activities in the region.
