During the G7 summit in Italy’s Apulia region, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, emphasizing India’s commitment to a “human-centric” approach and advocating for peace through “dialogue and diplomacy.”

In a statement following their meeting, Prime Minister Modi described the discussions as “very productive,” underscoring India’s eagerness to strengthen bilateral relations with Ukraine. “Had a very productive meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. India is eager to further cement bilateral relations with Ukraine,” Modi shared on ‘X’. He reiterated India’s stance on the ongoing conflict, emphasizing that “the way to peace is through dialogue and diplomacy.”

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that the leaders reviewed their bilateral relationship and exchanged views on the Ukraine situation. “Furthering India-Ukraine partnership! PM @narendramodi met President @ZelenskyyUa of Ukraine on the sidelines of the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy,” Jaiswal posted on ‘X’. He added, “The leaders reviewed bilateral relationship and exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine. PM conveyed that India continues to encourage peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.”

Joining Prime Minister Modi were External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra, who were part of the Indian delegation at the talks. President Zelenskyy provided Modi with updates on various aspects of the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue.

This meeting marks the second encounter between Modi and Zelenskyy within a year, the first being on the sidelines of the previous G7 summit in Hiroshima in May last year. Throughout the conflict, India has maintained a consistent position that the situation in Ukraine must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

The timing of this meeting is particularly significant, coming just before the Swiss Peace Summit. India confirmed its participation in the upcoming summit on the Ukraine conflict, scheduled to be held at Bürgenstock in Lucerne on June 15 and 16. Switzerland has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Modi to attend the summit. However, it has been indicated that India will be represented by a senior diplomat rather than Modi himself.

India’s approach to the Ukraine conflict has been to promote a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels. Prime Minister Modi’s discussions with President Zelenskyy reaffirm India’s dedication to fostering dialogue as the primary means to achieve lasting peace. This stance reflects India’s broader foreign policy principles, prioritizing human-centric development and conflict resolution.

The G7 summit serves as a crucial platform for global leaders to address pressing international issues, including conflicts that threaten global stability. Modi’s meeting with Zelenskyy underscores the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in addressing such challenges. As the world watches the developments at the Swiss Peace Summit, India’s contributions and perspectives will be closely monitored, particularly in light of its strong advocacy for peaceful conflict resolution.
