The Rajasthan government is set to enhance the connectivity of Amber, Jaigarh, and Nahargarh forts with a state-of-the-art ropeway system. This ambitious project, spanning 13 kilometers within the Nahargarh Leopard Sanctuary, aims to expedite tourist movement and bolster the region’s tourism appeal.
Unofficial sources estimate the project’s cost at approximately Rs 400 crore. Amber Fort, Rajasthan’s most visited tourist destination, attracted 2 million visitors in 2023-24, a significant increase from around 1 million in 2021-2022, according to state government data. Similarly, Nahargarh Fort witnessed a rise in footfall, with 1.05 million visitors in 2023-24 compared to 0.7 million in 2021-22.
In a recent development, officials from the Amber Development and Management Authority (ADMA) conducted a site visit to Amber to deliberate on the ropeway project. The original plan was to link Nahargarh Fort and Jal Mahal, a palace situated in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, but it has since been revised to connect Amber and Jaigarh forts via the ropeway.
The three forts are located within the Nahargarh Leopard Sanctuary, managed by the forest department. The sanctuary’s stringent rules and regulations initially posed challenges for the ropeway project. Nevertheless, tourism department officials remain optimistic about securing the necessary permissions from the Central government.
In addition to the ropeway, the tourism department is making concerted efforts to enhance the overall visitor experience at Amber Fort. This includes developing a dedicated parking area near the fort and upgrading the popular light and sound show. The initiative aims to model tourist facilities around Amber Fort on the lines of the Taj Mahal, ensuring world-class amenities for visitors.
The development plan emphasizes the establishment of hotels and restaurants in the vicinity of the fort to cater to the needs of tourists. However, to preserve the fort’s historical ambiance and reduce congestion, parking facilities will be developed away from the main fort area.
This integrated approach is expected to not only streamline tourist flow but also contribute to the sustainable development of the region, balancing conservation efforts with tourism growth. As the ropeway project progresses, it promises to offer a unique and memorable experience for visitors, allowing them to explore the majestic forts of Amber, Jaigarh, and Nahargarh with ease and convenience.
