PM Modi’s G7 Visit to Italy: Spotlight on AI, Energy, and Africa

As he prepares for his visit to Italy to participate in the Outreach session at the G7 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the event’s focus on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. This trip marks Modi’s first foreign visit since being re-elected for a third term.

In his departure statement on Thursday, Modi outlined the critical issues on the agenda, particularly those affecting the Global South. The G7 Summit, taking place from June 13 to 15 at the luxurious Borgo Egnazia resort in Italy’s Apulia region, will primarily address the ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.

“At the invitation of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, I am traveling to the Apulia region in Italy to participate in the G7 Outreach Summit on June 14,” Modi stated. He expressed his pleasure that his initial trip in his third consecutive term is to Italy for the G7 Summit. Modi highlighted that the Outreach session discussions would center on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa, and the Mediterranean. He noted the importance of aligning the outcomes of India’s G20 Presidency with the G7 Summit to address crucial issues for the Global South.

During his visit, Modi will engage in a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. He acknowledged Meloni’s two visits to India last year as significant in enhancing the bilateral agenda between the two nations. “We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and bolstering cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and the Mediterranean regions,” Modi affirmed.

Additionally, Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the summit’s sidelines, looking forward to interactions with other participating leaders. The G7, comprising the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, and Japan, is currently chaired by Italy, which is hosting the summit.

A significant focus of Italy’s G7 Presidency is to uphold the rules-based international system. Italy has expressed concern that Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine have destabilized global principles and led to multiple crises worldwide. The summit will also address the conflict in the Middle East and its global implications.

From 1997 to 2013, the G7 expanded to include Russia, forming the G8. However, Russia’s participation was suspended in 2014 following its annexation of Crimea. In keeping with G7 traditions, Italy, as the host nation, has invited representatives from various countries and international organizations to the summit. Besides India, leaders from 11 developing countries in Africa, South America, and the Indo-Pacific region have been invited. Although the European Union is not a G7 member, it regularly attends the annual summit.

Modi’s participation in the G7 Summit underscores India’s growing significance in global discussions, especially concerning technology, energy, and strategic partnerships. As the world grapples with complex geopolitical challenges, India’s role and contributions in these areas are increasingly crucial.
