A Delhi court has scheduled the bail plea hearing of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for June 19 in connection with a money laundering case tied to the alleged excise scam. The decision was made on Friday by Additional Sessions Judge Mukesh Kumar, who postponed the hearing after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) requested additional time to submit their response.
In parallel to this development, the court has set a hearing for Saturday to address an application submitted by Kejriwal. The application seeks permission for Kejriwal’s wife to join, via video conference, the proceedings of the medical board that has been formed to evaluate Kejriwal’s health condition and treatment requirements. The judge instructed the relevant jail authorities to provide a response regarding this request.
“An application has been moved by the accused seeking directions to allow his wife to join the medical board. Before passing any order, I deem it appropriate to call for a reply from the jail superintendent concerned. The application will be reviewed tomorrow,” stated Judge Kumar.
During the session, the ED proposed to adjourn the matter until June 25. However, Judge Kumar emphasized that the scheduling would prioritize the convenience of the accused over that of the probe agency. He asserted, “The accused is in judicial custody (JC), not in your [ED’s] custody. If he requests some convenience, you do not have any role in that. You have no role to play. He is in JC. I will consider his convenience, not yours.”
Previously, on June 5, a Delhi court dismissed Kejriwal’s application for interim bail on medical grounds. Despite the rejection, the judge mandated the Tihar jail authorities to address Kejriwal’s medical needs while he remains in judicial custody. Additionally, the judge extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until June 19.
The ongoing case revolves around allegations of money laundering linked to an excise policy scam. The proceedings have drawn significant public and media attention, given Kejriwal’s prominent position as Delhi’s Chief Minister. The upcoming hearing on June 19 is anticipated to be a pivotal moment in this high-profile legal battle
