Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has invited Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Bangladesh, highlighting the ongoing commitment to strengthen the robust relationship between the two neighboring nations. This invitation was extended by Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Muhammad Hasan Mahmud, following Modi’s inauguration for his third consecutive term as India’s Prime Minister.
Sheikh Hasina was among the distinguished guests at Modi’s swearing-in ceremony, which took place on June 9 at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. She arrived in India on June 8, marking her as the first foreign leader to arrive for the event. Secretary (CPV & OIA) Muktesh Pardeshi warmly welcomed her at the airport, signifying the close diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Mahmud emphasized the elevated status of India-Bangladesh relations under the leadership of both Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi. He stated, “The relationship between our nations has reached new heights. PM Hasina has invited PM Modi to visit Bangladesh, reflecting our desire to continue working together to enhance these ties.”
The mutual efforts to bolster bilateral relations have been evident, particularly in areas of connectivity and people-to-people contact. “As neighbors, we have numerous opportunities. Strengthening our connectivity benefits both Bangladesh and India significantly,” Mahmud noted.
The solid foundation of the India-Bangladesh relationship has been built over years of cooperation and mutual support. PM Modi has been a staunch supporter of Bangladesh, congratulating Sheikh Hasina promptly after her victory in the general elections earlier this year. Similarly, Hasina was quick to extend her congratulations to Modi following his recent electoral success.
The recent Indian general elections saw the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), secure 293 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Despite falling short of an outright majority for the BJP alone, the NDA’s collective strength affirmed Modi’s leadership. Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister places him alongside India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as the only leaders to achieve this milestone.
The significance of Modi’s invitation to Sheikh Hasina, along with other regional leaders, underscores India’s commitment to fostering regional cooperation. This approach was previously demonstrated in 2014 when Modi invited leaders from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) countries and in 2019 when he extended invitations to the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) nations.
The future of India-Bangladesh relations appears promising, with both leaders expressing a keen interest in enhancing their collaborative efforts. The invitation for Modi to visit Bangladesh is not just a diplomatic gesture but a clear indication of the shared vision for a stronger, more interconnected region.
The emphasis on connectivity projects, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges are pivotal elements in this relationship. Enhanced connectivity, including road, rail, and water links, is expected to boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people interactions, fostering a deeper understanding and partnership between the two countries.
As both nations look forward to this visit, the focus remains on building a future that leverages their shared history and geographical proximity. The ongoing dialogue and cooperation reflect a commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region, benefiting not only India and Bangladesh but also the broader South Asian and Southeast Asian communities.
