Unacademy Co-founder Hemesh Singh Steps Down as CTO to Transition into Advisory Role

Hemesh Singh, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of the prominent edtech company Unacademy, has announced his departure from his executive role. Singh, who played a pivotal part in shaping the company over nearly a decade, shared the news on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), where he stated he would transition to an advisory role.

In his heartfelt post, Singh reflected on his journey with Unacademy, expressing gratitude for the experiences and milestones achieved alongside co-founders Gaurav Munjal and Roman Saini. “After almost a decade of building Unacademy with @gauravmunjal and @romansaini, I have decided to move from an Executive Role to an Advisory Role,” Singh wrote. He added, “It has been a wonderful ride, and I am extremely grateful to have been a part of this journey. We did change the Test Prep Industry for good. What a crazy journey it has been. Thanks a lot @gauravmunjal for everything.”

Singh is an alumnus of Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), Allahabad. He, along with Munjal and Saini, founded Unacademy in 2015. The company had its humble beginnings as a YouTube initiative in 2010, gradually evolving into one of India’s leading edtech platforms.

Munjal, the CEO of Unacademy, also took to X to share his thoughts on Singh’s departure. “Hemesh (Singh) and I started working together 11 years ago when we were building Flatchat. It had been a Crazy Ride and I have been grateful to have a Co-Founder like you. Unacademy will miss you,” Munjal wrote.

Under Singh’s technological leadership, Unacademy revolutionized the Test Prep Industry, creating a significant impact on the educational landscape in India. The company’s innovative approach and dedication to accessible education helped it rise rapidly in the competitive edtech sector.

According to data from Tracxn, Munjal holds a 3.4% stake in Unacademy, while Singh and Saini each hold 2.2% and 3.4% respectively. These holdings reflect their substantial contributions and vested interests in the company’s continued success.

Unacademy’s growth trajectory has been impressive, marked by a successful $440 million funding round in August 2021. This funding round, which included prominent investors like Singapore’s Temasek, General Atlantic, Tiger Global, and SoftBank Vision Fund, valued the company at $3.44 billion. This substantial financial backing underscores the confidence investors have in Unacademy’s vision and potential.

Singh’s transition to an advisory role signals a new chapter for both him and the company. While he steps back from daily operations, his expertise and insights will continue to guide Unacademy’s strategic direction. The move is indicative of the evolving leadership dynamics within the startup ecosystem, where founders often transition to advisory roles to provide ongoing support while exploring new ventures or personal pursuits.

Unacademy’s journey from a small YouTube channel to a billion-dollar edtech giant is a testament to the vision and hard work of its founders. As Singh moves into his new role, the company is poised to continue its mission of making quality education accessible to learners across India and beyond.

In conclusion, Hemesh Singh’s departure as CTO marks the end of an era for Unacademy but also the beginning of a new phase of strategic growth and innovation. His contributions have left an indelible mark on the company, and his ongoing advisory role will ensure that Unacademy continues to benefit from his vast experience and forward-thinking approach.
