President Murmu Dissolves 17th Lok Sabha on Cabinet’s Advice

On Wednesday, President Droupadi Murmu officially dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha following the recommendation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Cabinet, as announced by the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This decision marks a significant step in the political timeline, with the Cabinet meeting earlier in the day to advise the President on this action.

The Rashtrapati Bhavan’s communique detailed that President Murmu, exercising her constitutional powers under Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85, accepted the Cabinet’s advice on June 5, 2024, and signed the order for immediate dissolution. The current Lok Sabha’s term was initially set to conclude on June 16, but this move brings its tenure to an early end.

In a related event earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi submitted his resignation to President Murmu. She accepted his resignation and requested that he continue in his role until the new government is formed. This interim period will be crucial as the political landscape adjusts to the recent electoral outcomes.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), the ruling coalition, secured a majority in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Despite this overall majority, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a key component of the NDA, won 240 seats. This result is significant as it marks the first time since 2014 that the BJP did not achieve the majority threshold on its own in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Consequently, the BJP’s ability to form a government is now heavily reliant on its allies within the NDA.

This political scenario poses potential challenges for the forthcoming government, especially in terms of passing major reforms. Rating agencies have highlighted that the dependency on coalition partners could complicate the legislative process, impacting the new administration’s efficiency in implementing its agenda.

The dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha and the subsequent political developments underscore the dynamic nature of India’s democratic processes. As the country awaits the formation of the new government, the emphasis will be on how the NDA navigates its internal dynamics and external expectations to maintain stability and progress.

In summary, President Murmu’s dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha on the Cabinet’s advice signifies a pivotal moment in Indian politics, setting the stage for the formation of the next government amidst a backdrop of coalition complexities and legislative challenges.
