Heavy Rains Trigger Alerts and Travel Bans in Kerala Districts

As torrential rains swept through various parts of Kerala, authorities issued urgent warnings and travel bans to ensure public safety. Residents, especially those in hilly and coastal regions, have been advised to remain vigilant due to the severe weather conditions.

The Meteorological Department has declared red alerts for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, and Idukki districts for Sunday and Monday, while orange alerts have been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, and Ernakulam. These alerts indicate the likelihood of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds reaching up to 40 km/h in several areas, including Kannur and Kasaragod.

In response to the weather forecast, the Idukki District Collector has implemented a ban on night travel through the district’s hilly areas until the alerts are lifted. The official statement highlighted that the District Superintendent of Police, Sub Divisional Magistrates, Regional Transport Officers, and Tehsildars have been directed to enforce the travel restrictions strictly. Additionally, mining activities have been suspended in Ernakulam and Kottayam districts to mitigate any potential hazards from the heavy rains.

Thiruvananthapuram, the southernmost district, experienced significant rainfall on Saturday night, resulting in widespread waterlogging across the city and its suburbs. This situation disrupted normal life, with news channels broadcasting visuals of flooded houses and shops. The incomplete Smart City Road project has exacerbated waterlogging issues, further straining the city’s infrastructure.

In many areas, canals running through the capital and its suburbs have overflowed. Affected residents have criticized the lack of pre-monsoon maintenance of canals and drainage systems, attributing the severe waterlogging to these oversights.

As the heavy rains continue, it is crucial for residents to adhere to the warnings and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed.
