Apple Nears Deal with OpenAI to Integrate ChatGPT into iPhone: AI Features Set to Revolutionize iOS 18

Apple Nears Deal with OpenAI to Integrate ChatGPT into iPhone: AI Features Set to Revolutionize iOS 18

Apple Inc. is on the brink of an agreement with OpenAI to incorporate the startup’s advanced technology into the iPhone, signaling a major step in its efforts to introduce artificial intelligence capabilities across its devices, sources familiar with the matter revealed.

Negotiations between Apple and OpenAI have reached an advanced stage, with both parties finalizing terms for the integration of ChatGPT features into iOS 18, the upcoming iPhone operating system, according to insiders who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the confidentiality of the discussions. Concurrently, Apple has also engaged in discussions with Google’s Alphabet Inc. regarding the licensing of its Gemini chatbot, although no agreement has been reached yet.

Should the deal with OpenAI materialize, Apple will be able to offer a widely used chatbot as part of a slew of new AI features set to be unveiled next month. Bloomberg previously reported that discussions with OpenAI had intensified in April, although no immediate announcement of an agreement is guaranteed.

Representatives for Apple, OpenAI, and Google declined to comment on the matter.

Apple is gearing up to make significant strides in the artificial intelligence domain at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. As part of this initiative, the company intends to leverage data centers equipped with its proprietary in-house processors to implement some of its forthcoming artificial intelligence features, as reported by Bloomberg.

In a statement last year, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook disclosed his personal use of OpenAI’s ChatGPT while acknowledging certain unresolved issues. Cook assured that new AI features would be introduced to Apple products in a “very thoughtful basis.”

During Apple’s recent earnings conference call, Cook emphasized the company’s belief in the transformative potential of AI and its unique position to excel in this field.

“We believe in the transformative power and promise of AI, and we believe we have advantages that will differentiate us in this new era, including Apple’s unique combination of seamless hardware, software, and services integration,” Cook remarked.

The impending integration of OpenAI’s technology into Apple’s ecosystem represents a significant step forward for both companies and signals Apple’s commitment to staying ahead in the AI race. With the anticipated unveiling of AI features at WWDC, Apple users can look forward to a more intelligent and interactive iPhone experience, thanks to the incorporation of ChatGPT and other advanced AI capabilities into iOS 18.
