Navigating Global Turbulence: India’s Need for Stable Leadership, Urges Jaishankar

In a recent interview with PTI, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the critical necessity for India to maintain stable and mature leadership amidst the growing global turbulence. He foresees a decade marked by conflicts, power shifts, and intensified competition, underscoring the importance of prudent leadership in steering India through these challenges.

Jaishankar, drawing on his extensive experience in diplomacy and politics spanning nearly five decades, painted a picture of a radically different world by the end of the 2020s. He highlighted multiple factors contributing to global instability, including the declining influence of the United States, conflicts such as those in Ukraine and Gaza, tensions in regions like the South China Sea, and the pervasive challenge of terrorism.

“The combination of these factors presents a very stormy international scene for the balance of the decade,” Jaishankar remarked. He stressed the need for voters in the ongoing Lok Sabha polls to choose wisely, advocating for the continuation of the National Democratic Alliance government to ensure stability in leadership.

Jaishankar pointed out that the ongoing churn is already evident, with conflicts and tensions unfolding across various regions. He noted the diminishing dominance of the United States, indicating a shift in global power dynamics. While the U.S. remains a premier power, other nations are becoming increasingly influential, and the U.S. itself has altered its posture towards the world.

Moreover, Jaishankar highlighted the evolving international economy, shaped by globalization and technological advancements. He noted a concentration of manufacturing and technology in certain geographies, leading to the hollowing out of capacities in many countries. This, he argued, has prompted countries to focus on diversifying their economies and protecting domestic jobs.

“The reaction to globalization’s flaws is driving countries to reassess their economic strategies,” Jaishankar explained. He emphasized the impact of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, and electric vehicles, which are reshaping industries and global economic dynamics.

In conclusion, Jaishankar stressed the urgency for India to have stable and mature leadership to navigate the complexities of the evolving global landscape. He emphasized the importance of strategic decision-making and continued engagement in international affairs to safeguard India’s interests and contribute to global stability amidst the turbulence of the 2020s.
