Air India Express is stepping up its efforts to encourage first-time voters to exercise their democratic right by offering discounted tickets for domestic and international flights. As part of its “#VoteAsYouAre” campaign, the airline is providing a 19% discount to young voters aged 18 to 22, enabling them to travel to their home constituencies and back for the Lok Sabha elections. This initiative aims to boost voter turnout and foster active citizenship among India’s youth.
According to a report by the Economic Times (ET), Air India Express is committed to solidifying its position as “New India’s Smart Connector” by facilitating travel for first-time voters. The discount comes in response to a dip in voter turnout during the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections compared to the previous election cycle.
To avail of the discount, eligible passengers must possess a valid voter ID and be traveling to or from airports near their respective home constituencies. Siddhartha Butalia, Chief Marketing Officer of Air India Express, emphasized the airline’s commitment to connectivity and inclusivity, stating, “As a brand that champions connectivity and inclusivity, Air India Express is committed to empowering the youth and fostering active citizenship.”
India boasts nearly 130 million citizens between the ages of 18 and 23, constituting a significant demographic segment. However, despite being the world’s largest democracy, many eligible first-time voters abstain from participating in elections due to various obstacles, including logistical challenges. Recognizing the importance of inclusive democratic participation, initiatives like the “#VoteAsYouAre” campaign seek to reduce inequality and promote greater representation of marginalized groups in decision-making processes.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals underline the importance of reducing inequality within and among countries, emphasizing the need for inclusive political engagement. Air India Express’s initiative aligns with these goals by facilitating travel for young voters, thereby enabling them to exercise their constitutional right and contribute to shaping the nation’s future.
The Lok Sabha elections, which will elect 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha, are being held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1. The voting for the first phase took place on April 19, with subsequent phases scheduled for April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. The election results will be declared on June 4, marking a crucial moment in India’s democratic process.
In conclusion, Air India Express’s initiative to offer discounted tickets for young first-time voters underscores the importance of inclusive democratic participation. By facilitating travel to home constituencies, the airline is empowering India’s youth to engage actively in the electoral process and contribute to the nation’s democratic dividend.
