Renowned fashion designer Varun Chakkilam asserts that the distinction between Indian and Western fashion has blurred, emphasizing that Indian styles need not vie for attention in the international arena.
Speaking exclusively to IANS during the LFW X FDCI event, Chakkilam expressed his perspective on the global recognition of Indian wear, stating, “The skilled craftsmanship of our artisans, combined with indigenous textiles and drapes, epitomizes wearable art. At our atelier, we prioritize artistry, believing that art transcends cultural boundaries.”
Addressing the question of whether Indian fashion is prepared to compete on the international stage, Chakkilam emphasized the timeless appeal of Indian artisanship, which has been honed over generations. “We don’t need to compete. Indian craftsmanship is deeply ingrained in our heritage, so much so that international brands often source embroidery and handwork from Indian artisans,” he remarked.
Highlighting the evolving landscape of fashion in 2024, Chakkilam noted the fusion of Indian and Western aesthetics, particularly in designer wear. “Many Indian designers are embracing Western silhouettes while retaining their inherent Indian design sensibilities,” he stated.
Chakkilam also acknowledged the role of celebrities in promoting Indian fashion, citing Sara Ali Khan as a prime example. “Celebrities like Sara Ali Khan actively champion Indian clothing, even in their daily lives. Their endorsement extends to international platforms, where Indian attire is showcased prominently,” he added.
At the recent fashion week event, Chakkilam unveiled his latest collection, “Lenora,” a homage to the radiance of light. Explaining his choice of Sara Ali Khan as the showstopper, Chakkilam remarked, “She embodies qualities of purity, creativity, and luminosity, which resonate with the essence of our collection.”
As Indian fashion continues to make its mark on the global stage, designers like Varun Chakkilam remain at the forefront, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity with their innovative creations.
