Delhi Government Prioritizes Education with ₹16,396 Crore Allocation in 2024-25 Budget

Finance Minister Atishi Marlena, who also oversees the education portfolio, announced a significant allocation of ₹16,396 crore for education in the Delhi government’s budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, presented on Monday. Emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing quality education, Marlena underscored the transformative changes witnessed in Delhi government schools under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership.

“In the last decade, Delhi government schools have undergone substantial changes. We have doubled the budget for education in the national capital. Today, we are allocating ₹16,396 crore towards education in Delhi,” Marlena stated during the budget presentation in the Delhi Assembly.

Highlighting the stark improvement in the condition of government schools, Marlena remarked, “Before the Kejriwal government, the state of Delhi government schools was subpar, compelling people to opt for private schools. However, significant reforms have been initiated.”

Marlena credited former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia for his pivotal role in enhancing the education landscape in Delhi. She reiterated the government’s focus on teacher training, disclosing that 47,914 teachers have been regularized thus far, with recruitment for an additional 7,000 vacancies currently underway.

Under the Kejriwal administration, student performance in Delhi government schools has seen marked improvement, surpassing that of private schools, Marlena affirmed. Furthermore, she highlighted an increase of 20,000 seats in state-run universities, accommodating a total of 93,000 enrolled students.

Presenting the budget for the financial year 2024-25 with an overall outlay of ₹76,000 crore, Marlena articulated the government’s aspiration to materialize the vision of ‘Ram Rajya’. The budgetary allocation for education reflects the administration’s unwavering commitment to prioritize and enhance the quality of education for the residents of Delhi.
