Nokia Eyes India as Key Player in 6G Technology Development, Explores Startup Investments

Nokia, a leading player in the telecommunications industry, is positioning India as a pivotal hub for its advancements in 6G technology and investment opportunities in burgeoning startups. Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Nokia, emphasized the strategic significance of India in shaping the future of wireless technology.

Batra highlighted India’s assertiveness and intent in the 6G domain, citing the country’s proactive stance as a driving force for industry collaboration. Nokia is deeply invested in fostering research and development (R&D) activities related to 6G within India, evident through the establishment of a dedicated 6G Lab at its Global R&D center in Bengaluru. Collaborations with prestigious institutions like the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) further underscore Nokia’s commitment to leveraging India’s expertise in 6G technology.

Despite not being a member of the Bharat 6G Alliance, Nokia remains open to engagement with all relevant stakeholders in India, affirming its commitment to bilateral discussions with key players. Batra expressed Nokia’s eagerness to deepen its involvement in initiatives aimed at fostering innovation and collaboration in the 6G space.

In addition to its focus on 6G, Nokia is actively exploring investment opportunities in Indian startups, particularly those operating in digital industries, cybersecurity, and network decentralization. The company recognizes the immense potential of India’s vibrant startup ecosystem and seeks to capitalize on emerging trends and technologies. Notable investments include Shadowfax, a leading logistics service provider in India, which recently secured significant funding.

Nokia’s holistic approach encompasses both technological innovation and strategic investments, with India playing a central role in its long-term growth strategy. The company’s commitment to leveraging India’s talent pool and fostering collaboration underscores its vision to drive meaningful advancements in the telecommunications landscape.

As the world prepares for the advent of 6G technology, Nokia’s partnership with India positions the country as a key player in shaping the future of wireless connectivity. With a focus on innovation, collaboration, and investment, Nokia is poised to unlock new opportunities and drive transformative change in the telecommunications sector, both in India and globally.
